New Zealand’s nephrite jade, also known as pounamu or greenstone—was formed by intense heat and pressure deep under the ground of the South Island’s Alpine region. This precious stone has surged to the earth’s surface as a result of the movement of the Pacific and Australian tectonic plates over many years. Each region of New Zealand tends to produce different variations of jade; each with a variety of colours, patterns, and textures. 

The native New Zealand Māori have a strong connection and respect for the land, and the pounamu holds incredible significance in their history and culture.
